What to expectRtD A Cappella holds a two-session audition, starting with initial auditions, then callbacks. For the first audition, you can expect to find a few greeters outside of the audition room to help make you feel comfortable. You’ll sit and talk, probably hear some bad jokes, and fill out our audition information sheet. This sheet gives us a better grasp on who you are in ways we won’t see during the audition. Then, you’ll walk into the audition room, where a panel of 3-5 of our members will ask you to sing a few scales, intervals, and give a short tonal memory test. Then, we will ask to hear a 1-2 minute prepared solo of your choice. Then we will decide on who we will call back.
All of our members and callbacks will be together in one session for around two hours. We’ll begin by a few introductions, warm up and go over the callback songs with your sectional as we would in a normal rehearsal. After this, we will hear the songs in quartets. This is when you will show off that vocal talent with a solo from one of the callback songs. Lastly, we'll have a bit of prayer and spiritual time praising our Lord and Savior! After callbacks are over, we will deliberate, pray, sweat, cry, shout, and argue over who shall be joining the craziness that is RtD. |

Do I need experience?
While it's not required that you have past musical experience, it definitely helps to have certain skills walking in, such as how to blend with a section, how to read music, etc. Don’t discount yourself if you have less experience than others!
Do I need to know how to read music?
As mentioned, while it definitely helps, we do not require our members to be able to read music, and make special efforts toward those who learn music through hearing. During auditions, while music reading ability is something to take into consideration, singing ability and a love for Christ mean so much more to us overall.
What song should I sing?
Think carefully when choosing a song to sing for us. Try to pick something you would expect us to know, as well as something that will be able to show off your range, tone, flexibility, etc. Also look for something that you’re going to have fun with though! Pick one that will truly show us who you are and what you like!
One request we do have however is to avoid singing rap or opera songs. While these are legitimate genres of music, they don’t tell us much about your voice in terms of how it would fit within our a cappella group. If you have a question about your song choice, email us!
What are callbacks? When will I find out whether or not I made it?
Callbacks are usually held the week after our initial auditions, though the specific dates will be posted on the website under “Auditions” as auditions draw near.
I have an audition conflict? What do I do?
First look for an alternate time, we have multiple days for auditions to be held. Check if another time works for you. If absolutely none of them work for you, contact us ASAP. We will try to do what we can to accommodate your audition, within reason.
If I make it into the group, what is the time commitment I should expect to devote to RtD?
We will have two scheduled rehearsals a week with the entire group and sectionals throughout the week to practice individual parts. We will be meeting twice a week for two-hour rehearsals. RtD has a winter and spring concert each year, along with time-variable gigs throughout the school year. Rehearsal dates will be Tuesday nights and Saturday mornings.
What if I just don't known my schedule? What should I do?
Talk to us. We’re totally willing to listen to what you have to say, especially if it pertains to your ability to be part of the group. Don’t let your confusion about schedule keep you from auditioning!
